Welcome to the World of Franciscan Ceramics
Exploring Over 40 Years of Research, Preservation, and Passion for Franciscan Ceramics
With over forty years of dedication to researching, writing, and preserving the legacy of Franciscan Ceramics, I’m thrilled to bring my expertise and passion to Substack. For decades, I’ve explored the artistry and innovation behind Franciscan Ceramics, from their beloved patterns and materials to their role in American culture.
As the author of several definitive books—including Franciscan Hand-decorated Embossed Dinnerware, Franciscan: Catalina and Other Gladding McBean Wares, El Patio Franciscan Ware Specials, and more—I have offered collectors, historians, and enthusiasts invaluable insights into Franciscan Ceramics and their creators. These works have become trusted resources for anyone passionate about this unique art form.
Beyond my publications, I am the creator and webmaster of the Franciscan Ceramics website (www.gmcb.com), which I established in the 1990s as one of the earliest online resources devoted to ceramics. I also created and manage the Franciscan Ware Collectors group on Facebook—a thriving community where enthusiasts share discoveries and celebrate the enduring artistry of Franciscan Ceramics.
My commitment to Franciscan’s legacy has extended to curating the Franciscan Ceramic Archives, a collection of materials rescued when the factory closed in 1984. I’ve had the honor of contributing to two exhibitions at the American Museum of Ceramic Art and receiving a Getty Grant, which enabled me to conduct interviews with ceramists directly involved in creating Franciscan Ceramics. These stories and materials offer a rare glimpse into the artistry and craftsmanship behind the ceramics we cherish today.
For full disclosure, I will be working with Microsoft Copilot to assist me in writing posts for this Substack. With Copilot’s capabilities in synthesizing information, drafting content, and providing suggestions, this partnership will enable me to share even more engaging and informative posts about the world of Franciscan Ceramics. Together, we aim to deliver the highest quality content for collectors, enthusiasts, and curious readers.
Through this Substack, I aim to share everything—from tips for collectors and deep dives into Franciscan Ceramics, to behind-the-scenes stories and insights from my archives. Whether you're a lifelong collector or just discovering the beauty of Franciscan Ceramics, there's something here for everyone.
The Franciscan Ceramics Chronicle is dedicated to exploring the history and artistry of Franciscan Ware. However, I do not provide valuations or appraisals for individual pieces.
I invite you to join me in exploring this fascinating world, connecting with fellow enthusiasts, and celebrating the timeless artistry of Franciscan Ceramics. Together, we’ll ensure that its legacy continues to inspire for generations.
